Improving Your Hardscaping

After I realized that our back porch was chipping apart, I decided that I needed to work a little harder to make things right. I started carefully analyzing the area, and I realized that the concrete needed to be completely removed and re-poured. I knew that asphalt work was beyond my comfort level, so I decided to call in a professional contractor to do the work. It was amazing to watch them work, and when they were finished our yard looked brand new. This blog is all about improving your hardscaping by replacing old, cracked, or discolored asphalt or concrete paving.

2 Methods To Use To Restore The Surface Of Your Asphalt Driveway

Blog

When it comes time to maintain your asphalt driveway, there are a few different surfacing options you can choose to restore its surface. Over time, asphalt oxidizes from the sun's ultraviolet rays and the weather, causing it to dry out, crack, and lose its strength and flexibility. Here are two methods you can choose to restore you asphalt's surface to help it last longer.

Seal Coating

Asphalt can last for many years, as long as you keep its surface in good repair. This can be accomplished every few years by having it seal coated by a professional asphalt company. The asphalt paving company will pour and smooth a liquid tar emulsion, similar to the tar emulsion within a hot mix asphalt mixture, over the surface of your dry and oxidized asphalt surface. This coating seals the top layer of the asphalt, restoring its waterproof protection, moisture, and flexibility to your pavement.

One of the great benefits of asphalt is its ability to be flexible under the weight and pressure of vehicles, and to expand and contract during all types of weather, making it a durable surface. The application of a seal coating protection is beneficial to maintaining the pavement's flexibility, and should be completed every few years as your asphalt lightens in color and forms surface cracks.

Chip and Seal

When you don't have the budget to resurface your entire driveway or your driveway is quite large, a resurface application of chip and seal is a good way to restore your driveway's integrity and flexibility at a lower cost. This resurface treatment can be applied by a professional asphalt paving company.

A chip and seal application consists of an application of a liquid tar emulsion. As this hot tar is poured from a paving truck onto the surface of your driveway, it is immediately followed by a coating of aggregate onto the tar. Because the tar is sticky, the aggregate sticks into the tar. Then, the paving company will follow over the aggregate with a roller compressor to push the gravel full into the tar, which holds it in place and creates a stable surface. Last, a sweeper cleans the surface of the newly-paved surface to remove any gravel pieces that did not become part of the pavement.

A chip and seal paved driveway provides additional traction for your vehicles, but you should take care if you live in a climate that receives snow. If you plow snow from your chip and seal driveway, make sure you don't scrape the surface of the gravel with the plow blade, as it can loosen the gravel and cause pitting to form in its surface.

Use this information to help you choose a method to resurface your asphalt driveway or bring in the professionals.
